A regular part of life for most missionaries is returning to their passport country for home-assignments. These visits help missionaries stay in touch with the people who enable them to do their mission and they provide a respite from the stresses and strains of everyday ministry in the field. It is still work, just a different kind. It's not a vacation, but a continuation of their work.
